Come together and defeat hatred – together we can, writes Cllr Patrick Vernon.

Since 2010 I have been co-opted as a board member of the North Muslim Housing Association which is based in Hackney. Over 70 per cent of its residents reflect the diversity of North London and the Muslim community. This year is the association’s 25th anniversary making this one of the longest running independent BAME housing associations in the country.

It is a tribute to staff, board members, community shareholders and residents that the association is still going strong and is in a healthy financial position. It is moving in a new exciting phase in its development whilst at the same time dealing the impact of Welfare reform where over 60 per cent of residents are in receipt of one or more benefit.

Board members have agreed for the following statement to be issued in light of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich:

“We are shocked and appalled by the horrific murder in Woolwich. We are united with the nation in condemnation of the murder of soldier Lee Rigby. This horrific incident reminds us why we should come together and work together to defeat hatred. We call on all, to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail.

This is a betrayal of Islam. Indeed, this is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn it utterly and unreservedly. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lee Rigby’s family and friends and especially his two-year-old son.”
