Event: Saturday 1st October | Leighton-Linslade TC – Black History Month Launch event
Leighton-Linslade TC – Black History Month
Leighton-Linslade Town Council will be launching Black History Month on Saturday 1st October with a month-long series of events, exhibitions and activities throughout the town centre.
In January 2021, Leighton-Linslade Town Council adopted the Local Government Association’s statement on Racism: “It is vital that we are all part of the much-needed conversation on how we can all confront and end racism. Racism has no place in our communities or in our lives”
The launch of Black History Month will take place at the Library Theatre from 12noon where residents can join Professor Patrick Vernon OBE at launch event to discover “why black history is important for everyone” along with a talk from local resident, Guyanese-born Ken Breinburg.
Throughout the rest of the month, residents are invited to view a display from the Movement for Justice & Reconciliation of Colonial Slavery, in the White House which is open Monday 3rd – Friday 7th October from 9.30am until 3.30pm and from 10am until 2pm on Saturday 8th October.
There will also be talks on “understanding how white racism affects white people” on Saturday 8th & 15th October from 12-2pm and Saturday 22nd October from 11am-1pm, in meeting room 4 at the Library.
Local venues, shops and cafes throughout the town are also celebrating Black History Month with music, food and displays.
