About Aggrey Burke:
Dr. Aggrey Washington Burke was a pioneering British-Jamaican psychiatrist and a foundational figure in transcultural psychiatry. Widely recognised as the first Black British consultant psychiatrist appointed by the NHS, he spent over 40 years—largely at St George’s Hospital in London—challenging institutional racism within medicine. His work exposed discrimination in medical school admissions, leading to a landmark investigation and policy change, and advanced understanding of how racism, poverty, and migration affect mental health. Dr. Burke was also among the first clinicians to question the disproportionate detention of Black men in secure psychiatric wards, leaving a lasting impact on mental health practice and equity.
