Hackney Citizen has honoured Sir Patrick Vernon on the cover of its July 2026 edition, celebrating his knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to racial equality and social justice.
The feature recognises Sir Patrick’s decades-long commitment to campaigning for racial justice, health equity and migrant rights. His work includes leading the successful campaign to establish Windrush Day, helping expose the Windrush Scandal, and co-founding initiatives that supported communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A lifelong advocate for equality, Sir Patrick has also served in a number of leadership roles across the health and voluntary sectors, championing fairer policies and greater representation for Black and racialised communities.
Reflecting on the honour, Sir Patrick said the recognition belongs to the many communities, colleagues and campaigners he has worked alongside throughout his career. He also reaffirmed his commitment to advancing health equity, tackling inequality and creating opportunities for future generations.
The cover feature recognises not only Sir Patrick’s remarkable achievements but also the lasting impact of his work in driving social change across the UK.
