Remembering Nellie Louise Brown at Hackney Council’s Windrush Day Event
On Windrush Day 2025, Hackney Council hosted a commemorative event to honour the contributions of the Windrush Generation. As part of the programme, a one-minute silence was held in memory of those who have passed. The moment was led by Patrick Vernon OBE and attended by local residents, community leaders, and family members of Windrush pioneers.
The tribute included special recognition of Nellie Louise Brown, who passed away peacefully in Hackney on 31 May 2025 at the age of 111.
Nellie Louise Brown was born in Jamaica in 1913, she was one of the oldest living members of the Windrush Generation. Her longevity and life story symbolise the resilience and contributions of Caribbean migrants to the UK.
