Shine a Light 2026: Patrick Vernon’s Address on Remembrance, Legacy and Collective Responsibility
At the Shine a Light event held on 31st January 2026 in Lozells, Birmingham, Patrick Vernon OBE delivered a speech as Chair of the Clinton Memorial Committee. The event, organised by The National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund (NMPMFF) in partnership with INQUEST and the Family Reference Group, brought together families from the West Midlands for a private ceremony of remembrance.
In his address, Patrick Vernon described the evening as a moment of remembrance, unity, healing, and continued purpose. He stood alongside Kris, Clinton’s nephew, noting that Kris was born a few years after Clinton’s passing and represented a continuation of his legacy.

Remembering Lives and Legacies
The speech highlighted the purpose of the Shine a Light initiative as one that lifts up the stories, legacies, and lives of those who have been lost. Patrick Vernon spoke about Clinton’s life and the lasting impact it had on those around him, stating that his presence continues through his family, the values he lived by, and the community that keeps his memory alive.
Remembrance as an Active Commitment
A key message in the speech was that remembrance is not passive. Patrick Vernon described it as an active commitment to carry forward the light of those who are no longer present. He connected this idea to the work of the Clinton Memorial Committee, explaining that Clinton’s legacy continues to guide its efforts.
He also emphasised the importance of building a compassionate network of support for families navigating grief, loss, and the silences that can follow tragedy.

Acknowledging the Next Generation
Patrick Vernon gave particular recognition to Kristian Sinckler, Clinton’s nephew. He acknowledged that although Kris did not have the opportunity to know his uncle, he carries his legacy with dignity, strength, and purpose.
Kris was described as representing the continuation of his family’s story, reflecting hope, resilience, and justice. His presence at the event was noted as a reminder that remembrance extends across generations.
Commitment to Supporting Families
The speech outlined the role of the Clinton Memorial Committee in supporting families who have experienced loss. Patrick Vernon stated that the committee is committed to ensuring that families do not have to go through this journey alone.
Through education, advocacy, and community outreach, the committee aims to bring attention to spaces where there is often a lack of support and to ensure that families receive recognition and assistance.
Closing Message
As candles were lit and stories were shared, Patrick Vernon called for a collective commitment to honour those who have been lost, support those who remain, and work towards a future where remembrance leads to change.
He concluded by thanking attendees for their presence and for continuing to keep the memory of loved ones alive.
