Celebrating the Class of 2025 and Inspiring the Next Generation of Health and Education Leaders at MMU
Patrick Vernon OBE, chair of the NHS Birmingham, returned to his alma mater: Manchester Metropolitan University to deliver a powerful commencement speech to the graduating class of 2025.
Speaking to over 500 nursing and public health graduates, Vernon reflected on his journey from MMU law student to national campaigner and NHS leader. He honoured the graduates’ resilience through the challenges of study, work, and the pandemic, reminding them of their power to lead with compassion and justice.
“Education is not just about knowledge. It’s about community. It’s about connection.,” he said. Drawing on his work advocating for Windrush justice and health equity, Vernon encouraged the cohort to carry forward the legacy of those who built the NHS and to shape a more humane, holistic health system.
As a proud MMU alumnus, The message was clear: “You are the soul behind the science. You carry the power to redefine what healthcare looks like in the 21st century, more humane, more holistic, more just.”
Congratulations to the Class of 2025 your journey is just beginning.
