Honouring Deacon Clovis Salmon OBE: A Windrush Legacy

Today, the Windrush 100 website commemorates the life and legacy of Deacon Clovis Constantine Salmon OBE, who passed away at the remarkable age of 98. Affectionately known and respected in the Brixton community, Pastor Salmon was a true pillar of the Windrush Generation, a spiritual leader, advocate, and role model whose contributions spanned decades of service, faith, and cultural uplift.

As we reflect on his passing, we are reminded of the broader need to preserve and uphold the enduring legacy of the Windrush Generation.

In light of this, several actions have been proposed to ensure that the legacy of individuals like Deacon Salmon is not lost, but honoured and passed down:

  • A minute of silence at all Windrush Day events to honour those who have passed.

  • Recording oral histories from elders, neighbours, and residents in care homes—capturing voices and memories before they fade.

  • Community-led advocacy that works with local councils, schools, museums, and heritage bodies to create plaques, exhibitions, memorials, and dedicated public spaces.

  • Curriculum change, to embed Windrush history within the national education system and ensure future generations learn this vital chapter of British history.

Now more than ever, it is crucial to act with intention. Preserving the contributions and lived experiences of the Windrush Generation is not only a duty of remembrance, it is a responsibility to truth, to heritage, and to justice.

Let us come together to celebrate, document, and protect the legacy of Deacon Clovis Salmon OBE and all those who paved the way.
