Honouring the Legacy of Nellie Louise Brown: A Windrush Pioneer

We came together to celebrate the life of Nellie Louise Brown at her ninenight. She was Born in Jamaica in 1913, Nellie passed away peacefully in Hackney on 31st May 2025, at the remarkable age of 111. She was one of the oldest living members of the Windrush Generation.

As we remember Nellie, we also reflect on the many Windrush elders we have lost over the past year. These pioneers gave so much, yet their contributions have too often gone unrecognised.

My forthcoming article in the Windrush special edition of the UK Jamaican Gleaner will pay tribute to Nellie. Her story is not just her own, it belongs to all of us. As we gather at her ninenight to honour her life, let us recommit to carrying forward the Windrush legacy with pride, purpose, and unity.
