Mohammad Sethwala’s Case and the Cost of an Unforgiving Immigration System
This case should shame the Home Office. For years I have campaigned alongside Windrush victims whose lives were torn apart by an immigration system that values paperwork over people. Mohammad Sethwala is now being subjected to the same cruelty. After losing his wife and young child in a tragic disaster, he has been met not with support, but with enforcement and hostility.
Migrant communities help build this country – socially, culturally and economically – yet time and again they are discarded when they are most vulnerable. This is not just bureaucratic failure, it is a moral failure. The government was forced to admit its wrongdoing with Windrush, but it clearly has not learned the lessons.
Britain must stop criminalising grief and start showing humanity. Mohammad deserves compassion, security and dignity – not detention by stealth and the threat of removal. Justice means letting him stay.
