INK!: Reclaiming the Radical Roots of Black British Journalism

With INK!, Yvonne Singh has accomplished something truly powerful. She brings to light the stories of pioneering Black journalists who, long before social media or digital platforms, challenged racism, built solidarity, and laid the foundations for the multicultural Britain we live in today.

Operating with little more than typewriters, determination, and deep community trust, these journalists shaped public discourse from the margins. They created their own platforms when mainstream media excluded them, addressing injustice, amplifying unheard voices, and documenting lived realities that would otherwise have been erased.

The individuals featured in INK! were changemakers in the truest sense. Their influence on politics, culture, and community organising is profound, yet their names remain far too little known. They should be as familiar as Orwell or Attlee. Singh’s work finally gives them the recognition and platform they have always deserved.

This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how real social change is made  from the ground up, in newsprint, and against the odds. It is a vital contribution to Black British history, media history, and the broader story of Britain itself. I wholeheartedly commend this book.
