Wolverhampton’s First Black Heritage Trail Launched in Historic Celebration

The Wolverhampton Art Gallery came alive in October as more than 300 people gathered to celebrate the launch of Wolverhampton’s first Black Heritage Trail,  a milestone moment for the city and its community.

This inspiring event, held at a venue deeply connected to the Black Arts Movement, marked the unveiling of a project that celebrates and preserves Wolverhampton’s rich Black history for future generations. The evening honoured the achievements and stories of local trailblazers who have shaped the city’s cultural, political, and social landscape.
Among those featured on the Heritage Trail are some of Wolverhampton’s most distinguished figures, including Professor Patrick Vernon OBE, Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis, international music stars Beverley Knight and Goldie, and Councillor Sandra Samuels, the city’s first Black Mayor.

The trail stands as a lasting legacy, a celebration of Black excellence and a reminder of the resilience and contributions of Wolverhampton’s Black community throughout history.

This launch also formed part of Black History Month 2025, whose theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,”perfectly captured the spirit of the evening. The event showcased the city’s commitment to amplifying Black voices and ensuring that their impact is not only remembered but continues to inspire the generations to come.
