Honouring the Windrush Generation in Barking & Dagenham

Patrick Vernon OBE was honoured to deliver the keynote address at the Barking & Dagenham Windrush Celebration, following an invitation from former Councillor Dr. Sanchia Alasia. The event brought together residents, community leaders and local organisations to celebrate the enduring legacy and contributions of the Windrush Generation.

During his keynote, Patrick reflected on the significant role the Windrush Generation has played in shaping Barking & Dagenham and modern Britain through their contributions to the NHS, local government, education, transport and industry. He also highlighted that, eight years after the Windrush scandal came to light, many victims are still awaiting justice, calling for fair compensation and the full implementation of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review.

Patrick encouraged Barking & Dagenham Council to revisit its 2019 Windrush Motion as preparations begin for the 80th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush in 2028. He also paid tribute to the late Sarah O’Connor, whose courage helped expose the Windrush scandal, and expressed hope that the borough would consider creating a permanent memorial or Blue Plaque in her honour.

The event concluded with an invitation for councils, schools, community organisations and residents to join the Windrush 100 Network, ensuring that Windrush 80 becomes a lasting legacy of remembrance, education, justice and community action.
