Is Race in the next Parliament?

British Future, supported by JRF are hosting an in-person event ‘Is Race in the next Parliament?’ on Thursday 27th June 11am-3pm at a Central London location (Lunch and Refreshments provided)

Policy issues on Race and Identity are often seen as of relatively low salience overall in government, but at the same time are also the subject of unconstructive ‘culture wars’ and generating polarising debates. However, despite the challenges, we are hoping this election, and its predicted outcome creates new opportunities, relationships, coalitions and increasing the political profile of race policy

British Future are running a project called ‘Navigating Political Change: Race Equality in the next Parliament’, which is a 4-part series of distinct events and hopes to support the civic society space in understanding the political context both pre- and post- election and be able to work collectively in advocating on race equality related issues. The project is funded by Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

This event will host two panel discussions, and an opportunity for wider participation and networking opportunities:

Panel one: Reflections of Past, Present and Barriers to addressing Race Policy

Panellists: Sunder Katwala (Director of British Future, Chair), Samuel Kasumu (Former advisor to No.10, Co-Founder of The 2022 Group), Kimberly McIntosh (Policy Lead- Windrush Justice Programme, ARE), Amna Abdul (Co-Founder of The 3 Hijabis)

Panel two: Building Coalitions for Change: Navigating Opportunities for Race Equality

Panellists: Patrick Vernon (Windrush 100 Network Convenor, Chair), Siobhan Aarons (Co-Founder of CARFE), Shabna Begum (CEO Runnymede Trust), Misbah Malik (Senior Policy & Engagement Officer, Hope Not Hate)

We understand that this is short notice for many of you. Given the recent election announcement, as many of you we have had to adjust the timeline for this project and given the past few weeks we recognise how important this conversation is.

If you feel like recommending someone we should invite to this event, then please let me know.

I will send out an updated email with agenda and logistics to confirmed guests on Tuesday 25th June.

Please email me heena@britishfuture.org to RSVP and let me know if you have any questions
