Lower Clapton campaigner Patrick Vernon to be knighted
Patrick Vernon, a long-standing campaigner for racial equality and social justice, has been awarded a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours.
For more than 30 years, Vernon has championed issues including racial health inequalities, support for communities affected by Covid-19, and the rights of older people. He is best known for his work promoting recognition of the Windrush Generation, including campaigning for the establishment of Windrush Day and helping to raise awareness of the Windrush scandal.
Reacting to the honour, Vernon said he was proud to be recognised for his contribution to racial equality and social justice over the past three decades.
Throughout his career, he has held a number of leadership roles across the public and voluntary sectors and has worked extensively to support underrepresented communities. He has also been involved in initiatives focused on health equity, community engagement and social justice.
Vernon said the knighthood is not only a personal achievement but also an opportunity to continue tackling inequality and raising awareness of the challenges still faced by the Windrush Generation and migrant communities. He remains committed to campaigning on issues including health inequalities, mental health support and community empowerment.
“This honour belongs to all the communities, colleagues and campaigners I have worked alongside over many years,” he said.
