Professor Sir Patrick Vernon OBE Celebrates Excellence at the Black Healthcare Awards 2026

The Black Healthcare Awards 2026 brought together healthcare professionals, leaders and organisations from across the UK to celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership in health and care. The annual awards recognised individuals whose dedication is improving patient care, advancing health equity and inspiring the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Reflecting on the event, Professor Sir Patrick Vernon OBE FrHistS highlighted the enduring contribution of Black healthcare professionals to the NHS and the wider health and care sector. He emphasised that the legacy of Black communities within the NHS is both significant and enduring, tracing their impact from the Windrush Generation and earlier migrant communities to today’s leaders in clinical practice, public health, research, regulation, commissioning, patient safety and policy development.

Professor Sir Patrick noted that the contributions of Black healthcare professionals have helped shape the NHS throughout its history and continue to strengthen health services and improve outcomes for patients across the UK.

He also paid tribute to Professor Faye Ruddock DL, Charles Kwaku-Odoi DL MFPH, and the Caribbean & African Health Network (CAHN), together with the sponsors, judges and volunteers, for delivering another successful awards ceremony. Their commitment, he said, has created an important national platform that not only celebrates achievement but also showcases excellence, promotes inclusive leadership and inspires future generations of Black healthcare professionals.

The Black Healthcare Awards serve as a powerful reminder that recognising excellence is about more than celebrating individual success. It is about honouring a legacy of service, resilience and leadership that continues to shape the NHS and drive positive change across health and care for generations to come.
