Creative Mental Health and Global Majority Communities: A One-Day Gathering in Brixton
On 19 March, practitioners, artists, funders, and community leaders will come together at Brixton House Theatre, London, for a free one-day event focused on Creative Mental Health and Global Majority Communities. Running from 10:30am to 4:00pm, the event will explore how the creative sector can better support mental health within Global Majority communities and strengthen opportunities for artists working at the intersection of arts and wellbeing.
The event builds on the Baring Foundation’s 2021–2022 funding programme, which supported around 40 projects aimed at developing the careers of Global Majority artists and increasing access to creative mental health interventions for people experiencing mental health challenges in Global Majority communities. This investment has contributed to meaningful practice across the sector, helping to address gaps in culturally responsive mental health support.
The day will bring together funded organisations and a wider network of practitioners to reflect on learning, share practice, and look ahead. Key aims of the event include celebrating achievements from the funded projects, launching a new report based on the programme, and creating space for organisations to connect, exchange insights, and build future collaborations. Participants will also explore how the creative mental health field can continue to support diverse artists and communities in an area of significant and ongoing need.
The event is particularly relevant for arts organisations and leaders already committed to creative mental health practice, as well as those seeking to deepen their engagement in this space. Funders and policymakers with an interest in arts, diversity, and health inequalities are also encouraged to attend, with the day offering an opportunity to engage directly with practitioners and community-led initiatives.
The programme will open with a keynote address from Stephen Rudder, artist, creative producer, and psychotherapist, whose work bridges creativity and therapeutic practice. His keynote will set the tone for a day of reflection, learning, and forward-thinking discussion.
With creative approaches increasingly recognised as vital to mental health and wellbeing, particularly within communities facing structural inequalities, this gathering represents an important moment to strengthen networks, amplify effective practice, and shape the future of creative mental health support.
Places are free, but advance registration is required. Those working across arts, mental health, community wellbeing, and policy are encouraged to attend and contribute to the conversation.
